ISDN shutdown Austria - what companies need to know now!
The ISDN shutdown is in full swing - but when exactly will it end, why was ISDN discontinued in the first place and how long will analog connections remain? You can find the answers in this blog article.
When will ISDN be switched off?
The ISDN switch-off in Austria is being carried out gradually by the major telecommunications providers such as A1, Magenta or regional carriers. New ISDN connections have not been switched on for several years now. The complete phase-out is scheduled differently depending on the provider, but is usually completed by the end of 2025. Companies still using ISDN today should therefore urgently switch to a modern successor technology.
Why was ISDN switched off?
ISDN was the standard for reliable landline telephony for decades. However, the technology is now outdated and causes high operating and maintenance costs for providers. Modern communication services such as video conferencing, unified communications or cloud telephone systems cannot be mapped efficiently with ISDN.
The switch-off enables a complete changeover to IP-based networks, which bundle not only telephony but also data and multimedia via a single infrastructure. This allows providers to reduce costs and create the basis for new services.
How long will analog telephone lines still be supported?
In addition to ISDN, analog telephone lines are also gradually being phased out. Although they are still in operation in Austria, they are also being phased out. Analog lines will also disappear at the latest with the complete switch to All-IP. Many providers already only offer Voice over IP (VoIP)-based solutions. Companies should therefore waste no more time and modernize their telephony in order to plan number porting and migration in good time.
Conclusion: The ISDN switch-off in Austria is not a distant future, but a reality. Anyone still using ISDN or analog lines must take action. Modern alternatives such as cloud telephone systems or VoIP telephony not only offer a replacement, but also real advantages: Flexibility, scalability and lower costs.
