What is a data space?

A data space is a federated, decentralized data ecosystem that enables the secure and controlled exchange of data between multiple participants. It is based on agreed technical, organizational and legal frameworks. This creates an interoperable and trustworthy environment in which companies, institutions and organizations can share data in a sovereign and self-determined manner without giving up their control or ownership rights.

In contrast, traditional data hubs with a centralized architecture do not offer these functionalities.

Saving the data

Two basic concepts:

Central approach

Centralized System Architecture(Data Lake)

A centrally organized data hub is based on a central platform that collects and manages data and controls access. This leads to low integration costs, but entails risks such as dependency on a central instance, increased security vulnerability and limited data sovereignty.

Decentralized approach

Decentralized System Architecture(Data Mesh)

A decentrally organized data space enables participants to manage their data independently and share it as required via federated mechanisms. This promotes data sovereignty, security and interoperability, but requires detailed governance structures and technical integration effort.

Use case: Transparent data infrastructure and efficient data exchange through a data space

In many companies , evolved IT structures and heterogeneous systems lead to data being stored in isolated silos. This makes it difficult to gain a holistic view of company data and prevents efficient collaboration between business units, subsidiaries or international locations. The integration of new technologies, such as AI models, is particularly challenging, as access to relevant data across different systems is often only possible with a great deal of effort. The following three use cases illustrate the importance of data spaces in the various application scenarios.

Data infrastructure & legacy data management

Data plays a crucial role in efficiency, innovation and regulatory compliance. However, companies face the challenge of breaking down data silos, optimizing collaboration and efficiently implementing regulatory requirements. A data space enables the controlled, secure and interoperable exchange of data without companies losing sovereignty over their information.

Data-based
Collaboration

In many industries, products and services are the result of complex value chains with numerous partners and locations. However, data availability and transparency across company boundaries enables the traceability of materials, the optimization of production processes and the use of new data-driven business models.

Regulatory requirements & competitiveness

Increasing regulatory requirements, such as the Digital Product Passport (DPP), require the structured provision of product and supplier data. At the same time, expectations of transparency and traceability are increasing, both from customers and authorities. Existing trustworthy data simplifies compliance processes and protection against counterfeiting.

Functional features

CANCOM Data Spaces

  • Full control over assets
Participants retain full control over their data. Data can be used without having to be shared or moved, which ensures a high level of security and data protection guarantees.
  • Fast onboarding
The onboarding of participants and their data is quick and uncomplicated, so that the data space can be integrated into the infrastructure with little effort.
  • Cloud-native technology stack
The Data Space is based on a cloud-native technology stack that is operated as a service. This stack supports a variety of workloads and use cases and therefore offers maximum flexibility for the requirements of the participants.
  • Domain-specific cloud services
Each Data Space participant remains in their own domain area. Dedicated cloud services make it possible to manage data in a secure and specialized environment, which meets the individual requirements of the participants.
  • On-premises option
In addition to use in the cloud, Data Space also offers an on-premises solution. This allows companies to operate their data within their own infrastructure, giving them additional control and security, especially for sensitive or regulated data.

CANCOM Data Spaces

  • Cloud-native open standards & open source technologies
    - Use of open standards and technologies from the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation).
  • Established open standards to implement:
    - Federation & federated digital identities for service connectivity.
    - Zero Trust Attestation Enforcement to ensure a secure access model.
    - Mutual authentication & encrypted communication between workloads, both local and remote.
  • Policy-as-Code
    - Implementation of identity-aware communication & access control, usage rights & responsibilities.
    - Decentralized policy enforcement to protect assets (data & compute power) regardless of where they are used in the ecosystem.
    - Standardized & automated policy distribution based on data usage agreements.
  • Federated service mesh technology
    - Standardized (continuous) deployment & operation of workloads.
    - Integrated security mechanisms for each cloud-native workload without the need to adopt additional standards or technologies.
    - Distributed tracing / traceability for transparency, monitoring and traceability of all asset activities.
